Through diverse film programming, educational initiatives, and community partnerships, the Uptown Film Center will use cinema to connect neighbors, generations, and global perspectives.
Bringing a 93-Year-Old
Landmark Back to Life
Built in 1933 on Broadway at W. 99th St., and known to generations as the Metro Theater, the building’s Art Deco façade and marquee are city landmarks — cherished symbols of Upper West Side history.
In 2025, the nonprofit Upper West Side Cinema Center, Inc. (our corporate entity) purchased the theater with support from state and city leaders, major foundations, and more than 500 community donors.
The goal is not just to reclaim a building after sitting dark for 20 years, but to revitalize a neighborhood and connect a community. Our vision extends beyond film screenings to creating a cultural hub where dialogue flourishes, education thrives, and community bonds strengthen.
Now, we’re launching a $29 million capital campaign to complete the transformation of this architectural gem into a vibrant five-screen cinema arts and education center with a welcoming community cafe.

Uptown Launches Two Winter/Spring 2026 Film Series
The Uptown is excited to announce it will be hosting two new film series this winter: Science on Screen® will be held at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia, beginning on February 24, and Tales of the Immigrant City will be screened at The New York Historical, beginning on March 20.
Tickets for the three Science on Screen films—Hidden Figures, BOMBSHELL: The Hedy Lamarr Story, and HER—are on sale now. Tickets for Tales of the Immigrant City go on sale on March 1. Check out our calendar below for details and tickets.
