Through diverse film programming, educational initiatives, and community partnerships, the Uptown Film Center will use cinema to connect neighbors, generations, and global perspectives.
Bringing a 93-Year-Old
Landmark Back to Life
Built in 1933 on Broadway at W. 99th St., and known to generations as the Metro Theater, the building’s Art Deco façade and marquee are city landmarks — cherished symbols of Upper West Side history.
In 2025, the nonprofit Upper West Side Cinema Center, Inc. (our corporate entity) purchased the theater with support from state and city leaders, major foundations, and more than 500 community donors.
The goal is not just to reclaim a building after sitting dark for 20 years, but to revitalize a neighborhood and connect a community. Our vision extends beyond film screenings to creating a cultural hub where dialogue flourishes, education thrives, and community bonds strengthen.
Now, we’re launching a $29 million capital campaign to complete the transformation of this architectural gem into a vibrant five-screen cinema arts and education center with a welcoming community cafe.

Second Season of “Science on Screen” Announced
After the resounding success of our “Science on Screen” series last spring, we are mounting a second season, consisting of three films paired with scientists who can speak to the themes presented. The three films are The Truman Show, The Biggest Little Farm and The Pod Generation.
