A New Name and New Vision for
Arthouse Cinema in Upper Manhattan

Why the Uptown Matters

We believe film is an empathy machine — capable of bridging divides, inspiring understanding, and building community.

Through diverse film programming, educational initiatives, and community partnerships, the Uptown Film Center will use cinema to connect neighbors, generations, and global perspectives.

Bringing a 93-Year-Old
Landmark Back to Life

Built in 1933 on Broadway at W. 99th St., and known to generations as the Metro Theater, the building’s Art Moderne façade and marquee are city landmarks — cherished symbols of Upper West Side history.

In 2025, the nonprofit Upper West Side Cinema Center, Inc. (our corporate entity) purchased the theater with support from state and city leaders, major foundations, and more than 500 community donors.

The goal is not just to reclaim a building after sitting dark for 20 years, but to revitalize a neighborhood and connect a community. Our vision extends beyond film screenings to creating a cultural hub where dialogue flourishes, education thrives, and community bonds strengthen.

Now, we’re launching a $29 million capital campaign to complete the transformation of this architectural gem into a vibrant five-screen cinema arts and education center with a welcoming community cafe.

Progress Snapshot:

  • $6.9M property purchase completed, April 4, 2025
  • Architects Voith & Mactavish hired, Spring 2025
  • Target opening: October 2028

Even Before Opening, the Uptown is Alive

While our building is under construction, our mission is already underway. The Uptown is hosting screenings, educational programs, and community events across Upper Manhattan.

Recent highlights include a 10-movie summer pop-up series in partnership with neighborhood arts and civic groups, and an educational program with an Upper West Side public school.
